The materials are appropriate for little hands that are learning to grasp, rotate and grip new objects. The new toddler will experience independence in choosing activities and bringing them to a worktable or rug. The children will learn to use their whole being to successfully carry an activity to their chosen place without dropping it. Then the children will experience success and opportunity as they begin to interact with the materials around them.
One of the best parts of our infant Montessori environment in Oakland, CA, is the inherent designs of the materials to show the children that there is an error in their work, with little adult intervention in pointing it out. This gives the children the opportunity to make a correction on their own which then fosters independence.
Additionally, art and art exploration is vital to the classroom in our infant daycare. The toddler child can utilize all their senses when working with a variety of art materials. A younger toddler will need more teacher assistance when gluing, placing their collage pieces, or using writing instruments, while an older toddler will be able to work in a more independent fashion to use art in a more creative way.
In addition to the Montessori infant care foundation, the children are learning to interact with one another in a positive way. They will begin recognizing their emotions and those of their friends, and with teacher assistance will begin to name the emotions they are feeling.
The infant Montessori program creates a foundation of order, care of self, care of community, and materials that will be built upon in the Preschool and TK/Kindergarten programs.
