Montessori Practical Life Activities for Preschoolers in Oakland, CA

The Montessori Method was developed as a specialized curriculum that provides children ways to learn for themselves in a warmly guided setting. At Oak Grove Montessori preschool in Oakland, our teachers are trained in providing both sensorial and practical Montessori life activities to our preschoolers, so they are engaged and having fun with learning. See a few Montessori practical life activities used in our preschool programs below:

  • Age 2 Practical – Carrying a Mat – To assist the child in coping with the movements necessary for carrying a mat. Development of voluntary movements.

 

  • Age 3 Practical – Three finger grasp – using clothespins – This activity prepares the hand for writing and it supports many other activities such as using scissors, doing up buttons, care of self-including feeding and other fine motor skills which are important throughout life.

 

  • Age 4 Practical – Sewing with a needle – sewing on a button – This activity prepares the child to have control of error on threading the button on the fabric and knotted the end of the thread. They develop the ability to have confidence, hand-eye coordination, and concentration in their work.

 

  • Age 5 Practical – Food Preparation – Peeling and cutting – This activity prepares the children to develop a sense of order of which come first to last. This teaches the children to be independent and have self-esteem to do things on their own.
